According to this article, hurricanes run in strong and weak cycles, which last many years. The last weak cycle ended in the mid-'90's, and we're in a strong cycle now. This would explain why we only just beat a record set in the 1930's, and remember, there probably weren't any very good records kept before that. Obviously, this gives doubt to the notion that global warming is making hurricanes stronger...
